All applicants must have evidence of some relevant pre-course experience in a field related to the caring professions.

Applicants should normally have at least a second class honours degree in the cognate subjects of fine art, art therapy, humanities, psychology, social sciences or science. Professionals including Teachers, Social Workers, Nurses and others working in the caring professions will also be considered.

Course content

Develop the confidence, expertise and practical skills to become a professional art therapist and help change lives for the better.

You will learn how to use art therapy to support people with very different emotional and mental health needs to feel a sense of inclusion and bring about positive changes to their lives. You will also develop your knowledge and experience by studying the theories that lie at the heart of art therapy.

You will enhance your expertise and refine your practical skills through supervised practice in the field. You will take part in a placement organised by course staff and lasting between 100 and 120 days. This will give you first-hand experience in providing art therapy for clients with different needs and in a range of settings.

Please note, this course will be delivered in Sheffield through the Art Therapy Northern Programme in partnership with the University.

  • ensure that students gain systematic knowledge and understanding of a range of theories and, at the threshold of their careers, they have the transferable skills to practice effectively and ethically in what are often complex and unpredictable specialised settings in the public or independent sector.
  • Produce therapists of a high quality who are able to play a leading role in the development of services.
