Aquatic Therapy

The DHR Health Aquatic Therapy Institute combines the benefits of exercise and therapy with the advantages of warm water in order to meet the needs of patients suffering from musculoskeletal disorders. Aquatic Therapy utilizes the warm, buoyant and resistive properties of water to help manage pain, reduce stiffness and increase joint mobility.

Blood Flow Restriction (BFR)

BFR is the application of a specialized tourniquet system to an arm or leg, which is inflated, to a personalized and specific pressure to reduce blood flow to an exercising extremity. This allows us to achieve significant improvements in muscle strength and size with very low loads of stress to the joint. BFR has extensive research that shows its effectiveness and safety. Professional sports organizations and advanced sports medicine facilities use BFR with positive results in conditions not limited to total joint replacements, achilles repairs, fractures, rotator cuff repairs, muscle strains, nerve injuries, post-operative conditions, tendinopathies and sports medicine injuries.

Hand Therapy

Hand therapy treats orthopedic upper-extremity conditions of the hand and arm. Conditions seen by the occupational therapist trained in hand therapy include fractures of the hand or arm, lacerations and amputations, burns, and surgical repairs of tendons and nerves. The outpatient therapy also helps patients suffering from tendonitis, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, and carpal tunnel syndrome. The ultimate goal of hand therapy is to ensure that the rehabilitation process promotes healing while also enabling clients to perform meaningful activities in their daily lives. Hand therapy engages the patient in focus therapies to help the healing process and foster positive outcomes for quality of life activities.

Scoliosis

The Schroth Method for scoliosis is an exercise approach that is used to help elongate the trunk and correct muscle imbalance of the spine that happens when someone has scoliosis. These exercises are designed to strengthen and balance the inner muscles of the rib cage. This is done with the goal to change the shape of the upper trunk to help fix or minimize any spinal abnormalities. The Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) and the Spinal Orthopedic & Rehabilitation Treatment (SOSORT) supports the role of this Schroth method and it’s exercises used for scoliosis treatment. This treatment approach can be used to treat patients of ALL AGES who have been diagnosed with scoliosis including those patients that have gone through surgery. This method is not effective or applicable on those patients that have been diagnosed with scoliosis because of neurological conditions. DHR Health opens neurotherapy institute

For Joey Cantu, DHR Health’s newly opened Neurotherapy Institute is just what he needed.

“I started feeling a tingling in my fingers and my arms weren’t lifting too much and I thought it was maybe because I was laying down wrong,” Cantu recalled.

Cantu was diagnosed with Guillan-barre syndrome, a disorder in which a person’s own immune system damages their nerves. It can cause muscle weakness and even paralysis.

According to a release – the neurotherapy institute will offer outpatient care for people who have suffered strokes, brain injuries and concussions – as well as many other conditions.

For Cantu, it means he won’t have to go to another city for treatment.

“A lot of the time you have to go to San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, and a lot of times that’s a problem for our community it’s difficult for them to leave and now hopefully they don’t have to,” McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos said.

For patients like Cantu – this means he can start his walk to rehabilitation without leaving the Valley or his family.

MCALLEN, Texas – DHR Health recently held a grand opening and ribbon-cutting for its new 18,000 square-foot DHR Health Neuro-Therapy Institute in McAllen.

Nathan Saffels, executive director of the DHR Health Orthopedic and Sports Therapy Institute, spoke at the event.

“DHR Health now offers eight specialized outpatient service locations including four orthopedic and sports therapy institutes, with our main location on the second floor of the Orthopedic Institute in Edinburg and a state of the art private therapy institute in south McAllen,” Saffels said.

“As we continue to grow and expand our services throughout the Rio Grande Valley our goal has been to ensure that the residents in all of our communities have convenient access to the highest quality of rehabilitation services available.”

Saffels said DHR Health will be opening other specialized outpatient facilities soon in Starr and Cameron counties.

“We are now excited to announce that for the residents in our communities there is no longer a need for anyone to seek specialized rehabilitation services outside of the Rio Grande Valley. And that is a major accomplishment for everyone across the Valley.”
