Firemen clean up after fire in stores adjacent to Ripley’s Believe It or Not on the Atlantic City boardwalk on June 24, 2022.

ATLANTIC CITY − A three-alarm Boardwalk fire Friday morning damaged five stores adjacent to the Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum.

Atlantic City Fire Chief Scott Evans said crews brought the blaze under control before 11 a.m.

Scott said the fire on the Boardwalk at St. James Place involved five stores — a psychic reading shop, Heavenly Stress Therapy, H&A Fashions, Devki Jewelers and a pizza shop.

He said an employee at the clothing store arrived at work Friday morning and started moving racks of merchandise out to the Boardwalk when she smelled smoke.

He said the fire quickly went to three alarms with 60 firefighters responding to the scene.”These are much older buildings next to Ripley’s Believe it or Not, so that caused more damage. There was heavy fire and smoke damage and major damage to the fashion store, psychic shop and the stress therapy business,” said Scott, who is also the city’s emergency management coordinator.

He said the cause of the fire remains under investigation but may have been started in a ceiling in one of the buildings.

“The fire is financially devastating for those businesses because summer sales in July and August are what gets them through the year,” Scott added.
